50,000 California State Workers Were Illegally Furloughed--03/01/2010

50,000 California state workers were illegally furloughed, according to an Alameda County Superior Court Judge. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger furloughed the workers in a bid to bridge a $20 billion budget shortfall. According to the court the workers are owed back pay for the time they were off the job. The administration plans to appeal the decision to the state Supreme Court and has expressed confidence that the court will rule in its favor.

California Judge Rules Against State Furloughs

On Thursday, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger was ordered to cease monthly unpaid furloughs of state workers. The Governor implemented the furloughs starting in February to address a massive budget gap. According to the ruling Schwarzenegger abused the Emergency Services Act because he implemented the furloughs when the Legislature was unable to pass a budget in a timely fashion, but continued the furloughs “long after” the budget was signed into law. The administration plans to appeal the court’s decision.

Despite Recent Lay-Offs, Yahoo Moves Forward With California Expansion – 11/26/09
