Workers in New York Look Forward to Sports Arena in Brooklyn

Lede: After years of effort a multi-billion dollar Brooklyn sports arena and housing/office project appears to have the green light. As Doug Cunningham reports, hard-hit trade unions are looking forward to the much-needed work.

[Gary LaBarbera]: “This project will represent thousands of construction jobs and thousands of permanent jobs.”

New York City Building and Construction Trades Council President Gary LaBarbera on the Atlantic Yards project. LaBarbera is confident that after years of hurdles the project will happen.

More Job Cuts at New York Times

More job cuts at the New York Times. On Friday, it was announced that 25 to 30 employees will be cut from the New York Times News Service that number is in addition to the 100 newsroom job cuts the paper announced previously. Nonunion workers will also see the company cease contributions to pension plans and instead a plan will be implemented that will apply 3 percent of worker annual salaries to 401(k)s. The jobs currently handled by the news service positions being cut will be moved to Florida’s The Gainesville Sun.

CUNY's Ed Ott on the Green Collar Jobs Roadmap report from the Urban Agenda is being released today. Ott says it’s a comprehensive strategy to grow a sustainable, prosperous green economy.

[Ott 2]: “Building service workers are very much engaged in the roundtable and a shift towards what we call a green collar economy. There’s a tremendous opportunity here for jobs.”
