  • House Republicans Vote To Take Health Insurance Away From 24 Million People - 05-05-17

    By Doug Cunningham

217 House Republicans Thursday voted to take health insurance away from 24 million people. That's how many people the Congressional Budget Office says will lose health insurance if Obamacare is repealed.

Not a single House Democrat voted for this.

The bill cuts taxes for the rich. It eliminates required essential coverages like hospitalization, prescription drugs, mental health care, and maternity care.

The Trump and House Republican bill cuts health insurance subsidies, hikes out of pocket costs and raises premium costs on older people. It lets states end requirements that insurance companies provide insurance to people with pre-existing conditions. And people with pre-existing conditions will pay more.

The U.S. Senate is not expected to rush its vote on this bill.

Progressive Democrats of America Executive Director Donna Smith says Medicare for all is the healthcare we really need.

And she says California and New York can show the way.

[Donna Smith]: "Now California and New York gotta lead the way. Show the nation how we're gonna make this happen. And California's bill will be just fabulous for the country and for Californians in particular.

Now is the time for all of us to really say Medicare for all's the only way to solve this problem."
