American University grad student workers will soon see their overwhelming vote to join SEIU Local 500 certified by the National Labor Relations Board.
That union local also represents adjunct faculty at American University in Washington, D.C.
The union victory for the grad student workers came after several months of talks with the university administration. They also organized a campaign that brought students, parents and the larger community near the campuses together.
This grad student organizing effort is part of a larger national Faculty Forward movement. In addition to representing grad worker the movement is also seeking to transform higher education to dal with often crippling student debt, high tuition costs and educators having to rely on public assistance to make ends meet.
