Public Citizen says nearly half of major construction contracts awarded by the state of Maryland were cited for worker safety violations.
Over the past five years 46 percent of the companies awarded major construction contracts worth $100,000 or more had OSHA safety citations.
Thirty five percent of those companies had serious safety violations - hazards that could cause accidents "that would most likely result in death or serious physical harm.”
Two of the contractors had workers killed on the job due to safety violations - one worker crushed by improperly placed barriers and another hit by a car after traffic warning signs were placed thousands of feet farther from her than required by law.
