  • "Old Man Trump" Woody Guthrie Song Accuses Donald Trump's Father Of Racism
    Updated On: Aug 21, 2016

By Doug Cunningham, July 5, 2016

In 1950 legendary folk singer and labor troubadour Woody Guthrie rented an apartment in Brooklyn from Fred Trump, father of the presumptive GOP presidential nominee. Song lyrics Guthrie wrote about the housing development and "Old Man Trump's" allegedly racist housing policies resurfaced this year. The Guthrie song protesting "Old Man Trump's" alleged racism has been recorded by Ryan Harvey with Ani DiFranco and guitarist Tom Morello.

Here's Morello's introduction to the song and a short clip from "Old Man Trump".

[Tom Morello]: “Hi, I’m Tom Morello, and I’m standing up against Old Man Trump, because when it comes to race relations, he’s like an old-school segregationist. When it comes to foreign policy, he’s like an old-school napalm-ist. When it comes to women’s issues, he’s like a frat-house rapist.  So let’s not elect that guy, and I want you to stand up against Old Man Trump, too…not just him, but the history that he represents and the policy that he put forward.”

    ["Old Man Trump" song excerpt]:

“I suppose that Old Man Trump knows just how much racial hate

He stirred up in that bloodpot of human hearts

When he drawed that color line

Here at his Beach Haven family project

    Beach Haven ain't my home!

No, I just can't pay this rent!

    My money's down the drain,

And my soul is badly bent!

    Beach Haven is Trump’s Tower

Where no black folks come to roam,

    No, no, Old Man Trump!

Old Beach Haven ain't my home!

I'm calling out my welcome to you and your man both

Welcoming you here to Beach Haven

To love in any way you please and to have some kind of a decent place

To have your kids raised up in.

    Beach Haven ain't my home!

No, I just can't pay this rent!

    My money's down the drain,

And my soul is badly bent!

    Beach Haven is Trump’s Tower

Where no black folks come to roam,

    No, no, Old Man Trump!

Old Beach Haven ain't my home!”
