Rev. William Barber – Using Fusion Organizing To Rally The Moral Center
By Doug Cunningham
Fusion organizing. That’s what Rev. William Barber says has to happen to overcome racism, economic injustice and the rise of the extreme right in America. Speaking on WBAI’s Building Bridges program Rev. Barber says such fusion organizing must address all of those things by bringing people together around a moral center.
[Rev. William Barber]: “You have to have the kind of organizing that takes racism seriously and takes poverty seriously. And that brings those two together in a critique that allows you to bring black people to the table and white people to the table and brown people to the table.”
Rev. Barber says the message of fusion organizing can be the same regardless of where in the country you do it – because morality and justice resonates with people everywhere.
[Rev. William Barber]: “We have been able to organize in Appalachia, in the mountains of North Carolina as well as in the black belt of eastern North Carolina. Not by giving different messages. But having a message of integrity and not talking about left versus right but right versus wrong.”
