Target Workers Strike Triggers Company Investigation Into Manager Accused Of Sexual Harassment – Unions Support NRVstrike.org
By Doug Cunningham
The strike and picketing at a Christiansburg Virginia Target store by New River Workers Power has led to an investigation of the Target store General Manager. Workers have alleged that the manager, Daniel Butler, has sexually harassed workers and made racist comments to them. Adam is one of the striking workers. We’re not using Adam’s last name in these reports.
[Adam]: “There was a big morale boost because one of the managers who seemed a little bit more sympathetic with us actually informed us that the manager Daniel Butler is now under investigation by the Target corporation. So we were successfully able to trigger that response from the Target corporation from the public outcry of support for our efforts.”
Adam says New River Workers Power were also heartened by labor union support on their Christiansburg Virginia Target picket line Thursday.
[Adam]: “We were happily surprised that the mainstream unions really stepped up without any kinda real outreach on our part. The actually came to us and said they wanted to help us out. So we ended up having representatives and union members from the UFCW, the AFL-CIO, including the state president and the UAW all show up on our picket line today. So we’re very appreciative of that.”
New River Workers Power is an independent workers committee that heard testimonials from workers about the alleged sexual harassment and racial discrimination being committed by target manager Daniel Butler. The workers committee decided to take action to try to force Butler out so workers wouldn’t have to put up with the harassment.
Adam says the strike and pickets will continue for a few more days at the Christiansburg Virginia Target store.
