GOP Senators Delay Vote As AFT Continues Mobilization Against Trumpcare
By Doug Cunningham
The American Federation of Teachers is very active in the fight against Trumpcare. GOP Senators pulled the bill temporarily Tuesday in the face of stiff resistance AFT President Randi Weingarten says her union is focused not just on political lobbying of Congress in this fight, but is also mobilizing members to block the GOP healthcare bill.
[Randi Weingarten]: “We did a telephone Town Hall which 50,000 of our members participated in about a week ago. We’ve had countless actions from West Virginia to Alaska to Ohio to Pennsylvania to Florida of people who have either sat in in senators’ offices or who have been around senators’ offices or outside of senators’ offices to make it clear what the impact of this bill would be.”
AFT is against the GOP healthcare bill because it will end healthcare coverage for 22 million people while cutting Medicaid by hundreds of billions of dollars so the rich can get hundreds of billions of dollars in tax cuts.
The American Federation of Teachers says real people will be seriously harmed by this cruel health care bill being used by Republicans to end Medicaid as we know it while rewarding the rich with huge tax cuts. In Nevada and Ohio Republican governors are against the Republican healthcare bill.
[Randi Weingarten]: “So this is not Democrat versus Republican. This is a matter of class.
This is a matter of the people who want tax cuts for the wealthy want this bill. The people who want to make sure that there is a safety net for individuals don’t want this bill.
And I go for the people – workin’ people in America – every day of the week.
We need to make sure that they have a safety net. We need to make sure that their healthcare is there and they are not one illness away from bankruptcy.”
