Fast-food workers agitating for $15 an hour and the right to form unions without employer interference will have what they say is a major announcement about their nationwide campaign Wednesday in New York. The workers are holding a press conference at noon Eastern Time today Wednesday May 7th at a McDonald’s on Sixth Avenue in New York City.
The fast-food worker movement started in New York City in November of 2012 with 200 workers walking off their jobs demanding a minimum of $15 an hour and the right to organize unions without retaliation. The movement has spread to 100 cities. In New York, California and Michigan fast-food workers have filed class action lawsuits alleging wage theft at McDonald’s. The current push in Seattle for a $15 an hour city-wide minimum wage was inspired by this fast-food worker movement.
